Prerequisites and co-requisites

Interest and curiosity concerning own questions. Openness to thoughts, questions and experiences of other attendees of the course. Capability to self-directed work.

Course content

Transformations in systems coming along with new principles or values. Questions concerning such transformations open a wide field for cross-disciplinary investigations. These transformations can be found in technology and sciences as well as in life science, society and culture, or in the experiences of people and organizations.

Learning outcomes

Students search answers to cross-disciplinary problems by self-directed analysis. Additionally to their answers to the proposed question, documented in their work, the following outcomes are intended:

  • Students are able to embed their professional knowledge into a wider context and recognize references to cross-disciplinary perspectives.
  • Students reformulate and rethink arguments and contribute own considerations to the cross-disciplinary group-dialogue. That way they get familiar with arguments and approaches in other disciplines.
  • Students develop awareness of consistent reasoning.
  • Students experience trial and error, failure and comeback in the context of   open ideation, while interacting with other attendees. They practise self-organization and try to have a go at new ideas and reapplications.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Mobilization: Students are given leeways to pick up own questions and approaches.

Actionability: Joint planning of an appropriate approach, outline of methods and readings needed. Specification of standards and requirements concerning the work result.

Performance: Specification of general requirements of collaboration and the mode of interaction (e.g. meetings, milestones, talks, presentations) which are necessary for an effective performance.

Assessment methods and criteria

The assessment considers:

  • The work result concerning the stipulated topic.
  • Commitment and contributions to the discussion.
  • Compliance with appointed stopovers.
  • Final presentation.
Comment

This module can be booked by individual students in both the summer and winter term if they prefer to work on a topic in greater depth.

Recommended or required reading

Dependent on the topic under discussion, readings and sources are subject to an agreement with the tutors.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face, distance learning)

Students are encouraged to develop own questions and thoughts as a crucial part of their learning process and perception. The tutors, taking the position of coaches and learning attendants, stimulate the discourse, giving students the opportunity to take up new positions and perspectives, to discover new links and to enter new grounds. While doing this, students are encouraged to be idiosyncratic, inquisitive and to query propositions which in common are taken for granted.

The mutual debate crosses professional frontiers and comes along with the chance of diversifying language, images and the comprehension of relations. The work results will be recorded to provide a link for further investigations.
