Course content |
Writing an argumentative 5 paragraph essay (teamwork) is the focal point of the first two thirds of the semester. Students can choose a topic of their choice as the basis for this task. Writing one or two coherent paragraphs will also be part of practising this writing technique. In the final third of the course, the novel "A Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams is discussed and analyzed and serves as a background for 1 - 2 short presentations prepared and given by students. A written exam will look at students' ability to write coherent paragraphs on the basis of a "topic sentence" and it will test students' ability to correctly identify the structure and patterns of different texts. Douglas Adams's novel will also feature in the exam. |
Learning outcomes |
Students are expected to acquire the necessary vocabulary and factual knowledge to generate and structure a coherent paragraph. This is the starting point for the written assignment, a clearly structured 5 paragraph argumentative essay. For this purpose concepts like topic statements, theses, and attention grabbers will be discussed and then implemented in the students' own writing. They will then also be able to identify the paragraphs patterns in different text types. |
