Course content

Information flow is an integral part of supply chain management. For the manager to make decisions, it is necessary to have information about the current state of the objects and the supply chain at any time and in any place. Information technology and software applications offer extensive support for management, planning and controlling. - Identification technologies and standards (RFID, barcodes, EDI, etc.) for object tracking and tracing, visibility and identification, as well as concepts for integration in a supply chain and production are presented and discussed. - IT-based procedures and opportunities in B2B and B2C are discussed. - Data provision and possible methods of analysis and tools with a focus on the SC are explained and their applications are discussed. - Feasible IT support in sales and operation. The planning process (S&OP) is explained.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge - Students know information and communication technology (ICT)-based opportunities and standards for the identification, tracking and communication of objects in the supply chain (e.g. EDI, bar codes, RFID, etc.). Students can present their applications. - Marketplaces, electronic catalogs, auction portals etc. for the implementation of B2B and B2C concepts and their fields of application are known. - Methods and means for the provision, analysis and distribution of data in the supply chain can be represented (e.g. data warehousing, big data, analysis tools such as multidimensional analysis, data mining etc.). Comprehension - Current concepts for the integration of information and technical possibilities within a supply chain from both an internal and a cross-enterprise view can be discussed and specified (e.g. industry 4.0, collaborative planning, forecasting and replenishment (CPFR) etc.). - IT support for sales and operations planning (S&OP) can be illustrated and described. Analysis - Students can analyse SC case studies and are able to discuss adequate IT support processes and technologies for supply chain management.
