Course content

The term culture will be discussed and elaborated as well as what the "Austrian Culture" might be - from the perspective of international students as well as of Austrians

The historical context and development will also be explored and students will gain insights into major differences between Germany, Switzerland and Austria. In addition, typical situations of everyday life will be analysed and compared to students own cultural background (e.g. family life, work life, studies, urban life, etc.)

A strong focus will also be placed on the value system (both Austrian values as well as EU values) and students will have the opportunity to explore how this has an impact on individual priorities and decisions.

Students will be able to learn and experience this topic both in- and outside the class-room as two field-trips are part of this course.

Learning outcomes

 After successful completion of the course, students are able to

  • discuss the terms culture and values
  • point out some specific aspects of Austrian Culture
  • recognise typical Austrian and EU values
  • recognise and discuss differences between their own culture
  • understand the historical and cultural context and express their insights in different media formats (e.g. short video, podcast, game, photography, text, sketching, etc.)
