Students are expected to have a fundamental knowledge of the database language SQL and of at least one object-oriented programming language such as C#, C++ or Java. Knowledge of a procedural programming language such as C or Ada would be an advantage.
This course focuses on the advanced topic of the management of persistent data, including but not limited to XML, the implementation, administration and tuning of databases, distributed databases, object-oriented database systems, object-relational database systems, XML-database systems, application and data integration, data warehousing, and data mining, database archiving, etc.
Students will gain in-depth knowledge of fundamental technologies for the integration and use of large, heterogeneous data sets as used in a large number of systems in business, trade and industry, and administration. The students (as group) will be able to influence the list of technologies covered in the course.
