Prerequisites and co-requisites
  • Mechanical Engineering Fundamentals 1M
  • echanical Engineering Fundamentals 2
  • Mechanics 1
  • Mechanics 2
  • Innovative Production
  • Machine Elements/CAD 1 and 2
  • CAD/CAM
Course content

Depending on the specialism offered:

  • Fundamentals of plastics technology
  • The manufacturing process of injection molding and
  • Design rules for injection molded tools

A constructive task will be used to address various themes of constructive design.

  • Analyses of the mechanical structure using the finite element method will be carried out.
  • The method of interpreting the results of the analyses will be demonstrated.

CNC programs will be generated by CAD/CAM systems for the manufacture of the constructed injection molding tools.

  • The injection molded tools will be produced on CNC machines.
  • The finished parts will be produced on an injection molding machine.
Learning outcomes

The students are able to design parts and machines constructively in a special field of mechanical engineering.

For example they are able to design and produce plastic parts:

  • The students know about plastics engineering, injection molding and design of injection molds.
  • The students design and produce an injection mold according to basic rules, principles and guidelines for embodiment design.
  • The students analyze mechanical systems for deformations and stresses using finite element methods.
  • The students consider possible sources of damage when designing and take these into account constructively.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Interactive lecture, self-guided learning, laboratory exercises and placement, project work.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written examination, oral examination on the project and assessment of project.
