Course content

This course provides a critical introduction to the subject of intercultural communication. The first part of the course treats topics such as definitions of culture and cultural identity; general value, belief and behaviour systems; communication theory and its application; and issues involved in intercultural interaction. In the second part of the course, characteristics of and critical differences between specific cultures are described and discussed in student presentations.

Learning outcomes

Students will acquire a knowledge of the fundamental issues associated with the theory and practice of intercultural communication. Students will develop a critical awareness of their own cultural identity and values. Students will develop intercultural competence through a critical engagement with the practices and values of other cultures.
