Course content
  • Overview of the different tools and their areas of application
  • Practical creation of various text documents (theses, reports, papers) in different tools (LaTeX, Markdown, pandoc, MS Word, LibreOffice...)
  • Dealing with citations (e.g. BibTeX, Zotero etc.)
  • Creating, editing and integrating typical graphics in a scientific context
  • Insight into the possibilities of collaborative text creation (e.g. Overleaf, OneDrive, Dropbox, Colaboratory etc.)
Learning outcomes

The students

  • can explain and compare the different common tools of scientific text production in their function and application.
  • know the advantages and disadvantages of the tools and their typical areas of application.
  • install and use the tools independently.
  • are able to find and integrate packages and ad-ons.
  • know how to use citation systems such as BibTeX and Zotero.
  • are able to professionally create larger documents (with sections, directories, index, etc.) using several tools (e.g. LaTeX, Markdown, pandoc, MS Word, LibreOffice, ...).
  • can efficiently create graphics for scientific documentation on the computer, edit them and integrate them into documents.
